Our Beginning…

Weems Creek Nursery School was founded by Annapolis residents Rod and Missy Tate in 1972. Mrs. Tate's philosophy was to nurture young learners while developing social skills and a sense of oneself. This philosophy carried over into the colorful, light-filled classrooms, the innovative play-based curriculum, and nurturing teachers who enhanced children's natural curiosity and love of learning.

The atmosphere of the school continues to be relaxed and encourages freedom of expression as a means to individual growth. Mrs. Tate believed children should be free to be children — to act, choose, explore, test, investigate, react, and experiment. In that freedom, children grow naturally in their awareness of themselves, their relationships with others, and with the world around them.

Since its beginning, nestled in the heart of West Annapolis, Weems Creek Nursery School has been providing a nurturing, engaging, creative learning experience for more than 50 years. Mrs. Tate once said, "At the conclusion of their time at Weems Creek, our children are well prepared for grade school... and beyond!"

That vision still guides us today. We've deepened it through play-based learning, the Responsive Classroom approach, and teachers who see every child for who they are and who they're becoming. Mrs. Tate planted something special here — and it's still growing.
